Label Stock Components:
Label stock is typically made of three key components: face stock, adhesive, and liner. Each component serves a specific purpose in label production. A fourth layer, over-laminate, could also be considered part of a label stock construction. Let’s delve into each of these components:
Face Stock:
The face stock is the visible, printable surface of the label. It is responsible for carrying the printed information or graphics. Label face stocks can be made of various materials, including paper and film. Paper face stocks are commonly used for applications that require cost-effectiveness and moderate durability. Film face stocks, such as polyester (PET) or polypropylene (PP), offer enhanced durability, resistance to moisture, and a wide range of applications. The choice of face stock material depends on the label’s intended use and environmental conditions.

Adhesive:
Adhesives used in label stock can be categorized into various types: including rubber, acrylic, and silicone-based adhesives. Rubber-based adhesives, or pressure sensitive adhesives, are known for their aggressive bonding capabilities, providing strong and long-lasting adhesion. Acrylic-based adhesives offer versatility, suitable for both permanent and removable labels. Silicone-based adhesives are often used for specialized applications, such as high-temperature environments or medical-grade labels. The adhesive type is chosen based on the desired adhesion strength and application requirements.
Adhesives can be permanent, removable, or re-applicable.

Liner:
The liner acts as a carrier for the label during converting and application. It is typically made of paper or film and is coated with a releasing agent to facilitate easy label removal during application. The choice of liner material depends on factors such as label size, application method, and the type of adhesive used.

Over-Laminate:
Over-laminates are films that cover the face stock. They offer protection to the printed surface and the integrity of the color. They can also be decorative. Generally speaking, the application of an over-laminate would be done during the converting process. Other than in specialized cases, a label stock manufacturer could provide an over-laminate but would not as part of the label stock construction.
